The iPhone X has some competition. Whether it comes in the form of the Google Pixel 2, the LG V30, or the Huawei Mate 10, it is not the most innovative phone of all time anymore. South Korean company Samsung has revealed their newest creation, the Galaxy S9. It claims to house the best smartphone camera yet, an infinity display, and a comfortable and sleek design.

Samsung’s Tim Baxter explains in an interview about the improvements to the Galaxy, “It wasn’t too long ago that people communicated by talking into their phone, and then the advent of text messaging came about, and that became the primary communication method for people.  Times are changing, however, and the new form of communication arising is photos, and the Galaxy S9 Family has been defined and designed specifically to take advantage of that,” he added.

The new Samsung phone, which released on March 16th, 2018, costs consumers a price of $719.99 for the regular phone, and the Galaxy S9+ will cost $839.99. It is said to have the best camera on a smartphone ever, rivalling Apple’s iPhone X, or iPhone 10. The iPhone X’s praised feature Animoji is also being rivaled by the Galaxy’s AR Emoji, which creates an Emoji out of the owner’s face instead of creating an animation out of the owner’s facial expressions and the Emoji they choose.

Another feature, which has been present on most of Samsung’s phones since the Galaxy S8 and S8+, is the Infinity Display. Instead of the screen covering only part of the front side of the phone, it spans from the middle of one side edge to the other, creating an almost endless screen, and allows the user to get the most out of the phone’s display. It also lacks a home button, instead utilizing a pressure sensitive area at the bottom of the screen.

The phone comes in three colors: Lilac Purple, Coral Blue, and Midnight Black. Customers have a choice of the regular S9, which is a normal size, or the S9+, which is bigger and has a bigger display.

Blake Marterella, a freshman who has been using Samsung phones since the Galaxy S7, shares his opinion on the new S9, “I think it is very similar to the S8. They seem to have used a lot of ideas from Apple’s new phone. However, the camera on the Samsung seems to be better, if not the best camera in the smartphone on the market right now. I also appreciate how they have put the fingerprint scanner in a much more ergonomic position,” he added.

In addition to the new camera, the phone is also said to be compatible with Samsung’s response to Apple’s smartwatch, the Gear S3. The new phone still retains the same processor that has been standard in the Samsung Galaxy phones.

The new Samsung may be just another phone to some, but to others, it is another choice on the market to compete with Apple’s iPhone X.
